Afton the African lion at National Tiger Sanctuary

Meet Afton

Afton is a handsome African lion and one of the unforgettable residents of National Tiger Sanctuary. He is the son of Niara and Leo and the brother of Raffiel.

With his crossed eyes, dark impressive mane, and confident attitude, Afton has a look and personality that make him easy to recognize. He carries himself like he knows he is something special.

The King of the Chorus

Afton is the most vocal lion at National Tiger Sanctuary. When the lions begin their roaring chorus, Afton is often the one who gets everything started.

Standing near him when he roars is something visitors do not forget. His voice is so powerful that you can feel the vibration in your chest — a true reminder of the strength and majesty of a lion.

Big Personality, Big Presence

Weighing close to 450 pounds, Afton is the sanctuary's most dominant male lion. He is protective of his home and is not shy about letting everyone know when he has something to say.

Afton brings energy, power, and plenty of personality to the sanctuary. Whether he is watching over his space or leading the lions in a roar, he is always a memorable part of any visit.
